Roper St. Francis Berkeley Celebrates 15 Years In Moncks Corner
Roper St. Francis Medical Center Berkeley is celebrating 15 years of delivering high quality patient care to the citizens of Berkeley County.
“We are proud to serve people living and working in Moncks Corner and the surrounding communities,” said Scott Broome, Administrator of the Berkeley Center.
Grass Roots Effort
Berkeley County’s only hospital was closed in 1975. When Hurricane Hugo roared through the Lowcountry in 1989, many residents of the state’s largest county found themselves shut off from accessible health care. In 1990, Gene Williams chaired a blue ribbon panel of 30 community leaders to work toward bringing an improved medical facility to the area.
“As time went on we realized how much we needed a facility to serve Moncks Corner and the surrounding area, St. Stephens and upper Berkeley County,” said Williams. “We’re grateful Roper was able work with us to provide these services.”
“They were visionaries back then to have created this,” said Broome. “We were one of the first freestanding emergency departments, providing great access to EMS serving rural Berkeley County.”
Full Service Facility
Roper St. Francis Medical Center Berkeley opened in March 1992 and provides an award-winning, state of the art, full service 24-hour Emergency Department, Berkeley County’s only outpatient surgery center and a medical office building with more than 30 doctors.
“There are 30 specialists who rotate in and out. These are the same doctors the patients would see if they went to our Roper St. Francis campuses in downtown Charleston or West Ashley,” said Broome. “They’re seen here and get follow up here. It’s convenient care they would otherwise have to travel all the way to Charleston to receive.”
Located at 730 Stony Landing Road in Moncks Corner just off US 52 Bypass/ Rembert Dennis Blvd., the Berkeley Center provides a wide variety of services in one convenient, easily accessible location. There is plenty of parking adjacent to the building and handicapped parking available near the main entrance. Services include:
- Full Service 24-hour Emergency Departmen
- Outpatient Surgery Center
- Laboratory Services
- Radiology Services including: CT, Mammography, Ultrasound, and Bone Density
- Physical and Occupational Therapy
- On-site Physician Specialists
- Outpatient Cancer Therapy
- Outpatient Wound Care and Vascular Services
- Pain Management
- Cardiac Testing
In the last 15 years, the Center has expanded twice, once to include a “Medical Mall” with physician office space, and then again to provide Berkeley County’s only ambulatory or outpatient surgery center to better serve the health care needs of area residents.
“Roper St. Francis Medical Center Berkeley is a flagship health care facility,” said Broome. “This model is being replicated nationwide.”
The Center employs nearly 90 people including nurses, technologists and support staff.
