Patrick J. Kelly, MD Receives Physician Champion Award
Charleston, SC – Patrick J. Kelly, MD has received the third annual Roper St. Francis Foundation Physician Champion Award in recognition of his “exceptional leadership and devoted service” to patients, the Lowcountry medical community and the Roper St. Francis Foundation. The award was presented at the Roper Xavier (Rx) Society Donor Appreciation Gala held January 26, 2008.
Dr. Kelly follows James M. Hayes, MD, who was awarded the first Physician Champion Award in 2005. John “Jeb” W. Hallett, MD earned the distinction in 2006.
Dr. Kelly has lived the majority of his life in the Lowcountry, growing up in Georgetown, S.C. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, he earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, completing his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois. Dr. Kelly joined the medical staff of Roper Hospital in 1991. He has served as Medical Director of the Emergency Departments at Roper’s downtown campus as well as Roper St. Francis Medical Center – Berkeley in Moncks Corner.
Presented by The Cogdell Spencer Charitable Fund, the Physician Champion Award recognizes a distinguished physician who services as an example of compassion, caring and philanthropic service.
As a past member of the Board of Directors of Roper St. Francis Healthcare and Roper Hospital as well as the current secretary/treasurer of the Medical Society of South Carolina and co-chair of the Roper St. Francis Healthcare Foundation’s Physician Partners committee, Dr. Kelly’s influence and participation has been integral in the growth and evolution of the Roper St. Francis Healthcare system. Considered a leader in the South Carolina medical community, Dr. Kelly has served as president of the South Carolina College of Emergency Physicians and the Charleston County Medical Society and vice speaker of the South Carolina Medical
Association.
The Rx Society, an annual giving society, was formed in 2005 to raise awareness and funds for the Roper St. Francis Foundation, the fundraising arm of Roper St. Healthcare. Dr. Kelly is married to Carol Aronson Kelly. The couple has two sons, Michael, a freshman at the University of Georgia, and Thomas, a sophomore at Porter-Gaud School. They reside in downtown Charleston.
